Recently, UNA experienced a cancellation of classes due a suspected letter containing "anthrax". After investigation, the suspect came forward and turned herself in. The suspect who is a UNA faculty member came forth and turned herself in Monday afternoon after a full investigation that required the Colbert County HazMat Unit, the Florence Police Department, the Florence Fire Department, the FBI, Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Public Health. The letter was delivered Thursday to a UNA faculty member on the 5th floor of Stevens Hall. It was later determined that the letter contained a powdery substance, but was still sent to a lab for testing. The 3 people that came in contact with the letter have been treated for contamination and are okay. The reason for the letter has not been determined but it was said that it was along the lines of "what comes around goes around". The teacher has been suspended immediately. I feel as though the teacher showed bad judgment and poor decision making when doing this childish act. Not only was she putting the recipient at risk but hundreds of innocent students.

I couldn’t believe this when I heard it! Anthrax at UNA? Not only that but who would do something like this. After it has all been found out that it wasn’t anthrax and it was a teachers secretary who did it I was even more astonished. I mean why someone would do that. I’m really glad no one was hurt. But I just want to know why the secretary did this. Is she mad at someone? Did the university make her mad? People need to realize that you cannot “joke” about things like that this day n age. It’s just too dangerous a world we live in.
ReplyDeleteI was actually at the Southaven basketball tournament when this occured and could not believe what I had heard as my boss told me about it! After the anthrax happennings in years past, and people getting arrested and worst for playing jokes, you would think someone would know better than to do something like this on a University's campus. Very immature and reckless, whether it was a joke or not, it should not have happened.
